“The Farmer’s Almanac” has predicted that this would be a cold winter and I must say I don’t know how they know these things, but they were right! These are some of the coldest temperatures we’ve seen in years.
Here are several things to do around the house to prepare for the extreme temperatures:
Make sure that any outdoor water faucets are shut off at the valves inside to prevent freezing.
Open cabinet doors under sinks to avoid freeze ups, especially when plumbing is located on outside walls.
Keep blinds and curtains closed to keep the heat in.
Close the fireplace damper when not in use.
Keep flash lights handy in the case of a power outage.
To stay safe check to make sure your Carbon Monoxide Detector has good batteries and is working.
Keep in mind that if the power goes out the heat goes out as well. If this happens remember to do the following:
Turn both the cold and hot water faucets on to just a drip in bathrooms and kitchen to keep them from freezing.
Check on elderly friends and neighbors to make sure they are fine.
In order to stay comfortable remember to check your humidifier to confirm that it is working properly. A working humidifier will make you feel warmer and will prevent itchy dry skin. Make sure both the filter in your humidifier and the filter in your furnace have been changed. If you have experienced dry cracked skin during the winter and don’t yet have a humidifier, we have a solution! Call today for consultation regarding a humidifier that would best fit your needs.
Well we’ve made it half way through the coldest time of the year here in Ohio so take heart, read a good book, think spring and press on!
Thanks, Mike Foraker
